Integrated Outcome Studies

We have developed a computerized system, GoalMinder, that compares and contrasts the effectiveness of a treatment for a particular problem. We monitor our own track record with each client and change procedures   when clients need better solutions.

State of the Art Approaches

We regularly review research advances and modify our treatment programs as new techniques are demonstrated through legitimate scientific publications to provide the most effective help available. Our staff regularly participates in professional seminars and training to maintain and increase technical abilities.

Detailed Symptom Tracking

Using simple questionnaires as our version of a "stethoscope", our clinicians check with clients frequently during ongoing therapy to quantify symptom changes and progress towards personal goals. We graph progress, identify areas where a client might be "stuck" and provide a variety of ways to make therapy work. The information obtained is entered into a database which allows us to analyze the overall effectiveness of particular treatments as they apply to the client's special needs.

Change-by-doing Philosophy

At one time clinical psychologists believed that helping a client achieve insight into their problems was all it took to "fix" emotional and behavioral difficulties. We know now that insight is helpful, but very frequently does not result in resolution of a client's problem. We emphasize at Mental Health Solutions that our therapy involves an active partnership between client and therapist, similar to the relationship between coach and athlete. Our clients don't just passively receive support from us; they make real, lasting changes in their lives by active practice.

Psychological "Aerobics"

Between sessions, our clients may use easily understood and accessible clinical worksheets, exercises, video and other "workout routine" tailored for their issues. Changing habits of thinking, feeling, and behaving are not unlike building physical strength and coordination; workouts are important, practice is important, and carefully planned workouts result in a psychological well-beingan emotional version of staying in shape.

Therapy Techniques & Specialties

Our therapy techniques and specialties include brief, solution-based therapy; cognitive restructuring procedures; imagery techniques; hypnosis; behavioral modification; communication enhancement; sexual therapy; gay and lesbian issues; play therapy; stress and time management; social skills training; self-esteem building; sexual abuse survivor counseling; sexual "addictions" relapse prevention training; systems-oriented, child, couple, and family work; mindfulness; blended family and alternative family issues; conflict resolution; performance enhancement.

Cost-effective Evaluations

An important service to clients is the production of a psychological evaluation, a report prepared by a licensed psychologist that combines clinical interviews and testing to identify and describe in detail the psychological strengths and difficulties of an individual. Evaluations are more comprehensive than initial diagnostic workups  and are utilized by hospital staff, by therapists who need in-depth diagnostic assistance, and for a variety of legal situations in which information about a client's psychological profile is necessary for court. Examples include custody issues, competency to stand trial, insanity defense pleas, and workmen's compensation claims regarding PTSD.

Evaluations performed by our staff include IQ and cognitive functioning assessments; attention deficit hyperactivity disorder; learning disorders; personality disorders; sexual disorders, including sex offender evaluations; sports or performance anxiety evaluations; custody studies; couples evaluations, designed to identify individual, interactional, and external factors interfering with couple compatibility; anger assessments; family assessments.

Consultation & In-service Training Programs

We present seminars and training to businesses and organizations, including sexual harassment issues; stress reduction; enhancing communication; balancing work and family responsibilities; psychological issues related to injury or medical conditions.
