Treatment specialties: Mary specializes in emotional and behavioral difficulties of adolescents and adults, including problems with depression, anxiety, self-esteem, school and work performance, stress management, parenting, grief/loss and relationship conflict. She also works with women with eating disorders and body image issues and is interested in working with clients with chronic health issues including chronic pain and illness, utilizing a mind/body/spirit approach.

Training/Experience: Mary is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker. She earned her graduate degree, a MSSW, from the University of Wisconsin-Madison with a specialization in Clinical Social Work. She was awarded a Traineeship from the National Institute of Mental Health. After graduate school, she completed one year of Post-Graduate training at the Family Therapy Center. Mary initially worked as a Family Therapist, providing in-home family therapy on a long-term basis. At that time, she also facilitated an Adventure-Based Counseling program, based on the Outward Bound model. Mary then began working in private practice in out-patient mental health clinics and has since been in private practice for more than 20 years. Since 1998, Mary has also been a frequent Lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the Human Development and Family Studies department and for the Social Work graduate department. She has taught various courses including Family Stress and Coping, Assessment and Treatment of Children and Adolescents and Family Systems.

Techniques: Mary utilizes various approaches dependent on the needs of her client. Frequently she will employ cognitive-behavioral techniques along with a family systems approach and solution-focused concepts. Depending upon the goals of treatment, she will also help clients with interpersonal and communication skill development and conflict resolution strategies. She will often engage family members and significant others in a client's treatment to help address the whole person and various systems involved. Mary works with psychiatric consultation to provide coordinated medication management whenever necessary.
