She helps couples reduce conflict in their relationships by improving their communication skills. Joan also works with clients and their partners who are experiencing major life change adjustments due to medical problems.
Training/Experience: Joan is a Licensed Professional Counselor. She earned a BS from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a graduate degree (MAED) in Guidance and Counseling from the U of Missouri-St. Louis, a MSW from Washington University in St. Louis and her LPC from the U Wisconsin-Madison. Having many years of work experience in schools, Joan has expertise in consultation and collaboration with school personnel concerning clients' academic performance and/or behavioral difficulties. Joan is also a co-author of The Guardian Ad Litem Handbook, a publication of the WIsconsin Bar Association. Joan is the only non-attorney author of this reference work.
Treatment approach: Joan primarily utilizes cognitive-behavioral techniques with solution-focused treatment. Depending upon the goals of treatment, she uses a variety of additional techniques, including interpersonal skill development and family systems techniques. Joan works with psychiatric consultation to provide coordinated medication management whenever necessary. She also coordinates treatment efforts with school personnel as needed.
